Does SNAP Affect Social Security Benefits in 2026?
June 30, 2026 · 4 min read
No — SNAP does not reduce or affect Social Security retirement or SSDI benefits. SNAP is also excluded from SSI income calculations by federal law. Many Social Security recipients receive SNAP simultaneously, and it's encouraged to apply for both.
SNAP and each Social Security program
| Program | Does SNAP affect it? | Does it count for SNAP? |
|---|---|---|
| Social Security retirement | No effect | Yes — counted as unearned income for SNAP |
| SSDI | No effect | Yes — counted as unearned income for SNAP |
| SSI | No effect (federally excluded) | No — SSI is not counted as income for SNAP |
Can Social Security recipients get SNAP?
Yes — and many do. In 2026, millions of Social Security retirement and disability recipients also receive SNAP. Social Security income is counted as unearned income for SNAP eligibility, which can reduce your SNAP benefit. But seniors and people with disabilities receive special SNAP deductions that offset this:
- Medical expense deduction: If you're 60+ or disabled and have out-of-pocket medical costs over $35/month, the excess reduces your countable income. This includes Medicare premiums, prescription copays, dental, and medical transportation.
- Shelter deduction: High rent or mortgage costs can reduce countable income.
- Net income test only: Seniors (60+) and disabled households only need to meet the net income test — not the gross income test. This makes it easier to qualify even with moderate Social Security income.

Single senior, $1,400/month Social Security, $650/month rent + utilities
- Gross income: $1,400 — seniors (60+) are exempt from the gross income test and use the net income test only
- Subtract 20% earned income exclusion (not applicable — all unearned)
- Subtract standard deduction: $209
- Subtract shelter deduction (rent exceeds 50% of income): reduces income significantly
- Net income may be under 100% FPL ($1,305) — SNAP eligible
- Benefit: maximum minus 30% of net income
Common questions
Does SNAP affect Social Security retirement benefits?
No — SNAP has no effect on Social Security retirement. The amount is based on your work history and claiming age, not income or SNAP status.
Does SNAP affect SSDI benefits?
No — SSDI is not affected by SNAP. You can receive both simultaneously.
Does SNAP affect SSI benefits?
No — by federal law, SNAP is excluded from SSI income calculations. Receiving SNAP will not reduce your SSI payment.
Does Social Security count as income for SNAP?
Social Security retirement and SSDI count as unearned income for SNAP. SSI does not count. Seniors and disabled persons get special deductions that often offset this income and may still qualify them for SNAP.
