What we collect
FindBenefit asks you questions about your household and situation in order to estimate eligibility for government benefit programs. Specifically, the screener may ask about:
- Demographics: age, household size, number of children, and whether you have children under 5
- Location: zip code, state, and whether you live in a rural area
- Financial: monthly income, whether you pay for childcare, retirement contributions, student loans, high medical costs, a mortgage, and whether you are unbanked
- Employment: employment status (employed, self-employed, unemployed, retired), whether you are seeking job training, whether you work for a government or nonprofit, whether you plan to become a teacher, and whether you are seeking to start a business
- Housing: whether you rent, are behind on rent, have a high utility burden, or are a first-time homebuyer
- Health & insurance: whether you are uninsured, on Medicare, have a high-deductible health plan, have a workplace health plan, or have high out-of-pocket medical costs
- Family & household: marital status (married or widowed), whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, whether a household member has a disability, whether there is a college student in your household, and whether you are adopting
- Education: whether you have a high school diploma or GED
- Veteran status: whether you are a veteran, and whether you served during wartime
We do not collect your name, email address, Social Security number, date of birth, or any account credentials.
Where your answers are stored
Your answers are saved in your browser’s local storage (under the key
bf_answers) so that you can return to the screener without re-entering
everything. This data lives entirely on your device. It is not transmitted to our servers
until you click Check my benefits, and it is never written to a database
or retained after your session ends.
To delete your saved answers at any time, use the Clear answers button on the screener page, or clear your browser’s local storage for this site.
How your answers are used
When you submit the screener, your answers are sent to our server over an encrypted connection and processed in memory to calculate your estimated eligibility. The result is returned to your browser and held in server memory only for the duration of your session. Nothing is written to a database or log file.
Third-party services
Two external services may receive a subset of your information during screening:
- Zippopotam.us — your zip code is sent to this public API to resolve your city name. No other information is shared.
- NYC Benefits Screening API — if your zip code is in New York City, your screening profile is also sent to the City of New York’s benefits API to surface additional local programs. This only occurs for NYC residents.
FindBenefit uses Google Analytics to collect anonymous page-view data (pages visited, session counts). Your screening answers are never included in analytics events.
Sensitive information
Some questions touch on sensitive categories — including disability status, veteran status, pregnancy, and financial distress. This information is used solely to evaluate benefit eligibility and is handled as described above. We do not sell, share, or use this information for any other purpose.
Children
FindBenefit is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to how we handle your information, we will update the date at the top of this page.
