SSI vs SSDI: Which Pays More in 2026?
June 30, 2026 · 5 min read · Full SSI vs SSDI comparison →
SSDI typically pays more — the 2026 average is $1,630/month vs SSI's $994/month maximum. But SSDI requires a work history. If you qualify for both, you can receive concurrent benefits with SSI topping up a low SSDI payment.

Which pays more: the verdict
For people with a strong work history, SSDI almost always pays more than SSI. Someone who earned average wages for 20+ years might receive $2,000–$3,000/month in SSDI. SSI is capped at $994/month regardless.
For people with little or no work history (or who became disabled very young), SSI may be the only option — and it can be combined with any small SSDI payment you might qualify for.
Concurrent benefits: getting both
You can receive SSI and SSDI simultaneously if your SSDI payment is below the SSI maximum. Here's how the math works:
Example: SSDI of $600/month
- SSDI counts as unearned income for SSI
- SSI subtracts $20 general exclusion: $600 − $20 = $580 countable income
- SSI payment = $994 − $580 = $414 SSI
- Total monthly income: $600 SSDI + $414 SSI = $1,014/month
With concurrent benefits, you also get both Medicaid (from SSI) and Medicare (from SSDI after 24 months) — making you "dual eligible" with comprehensive health coverage at low/no cost.

Which pays more, SSI or SSDI in 2026?
SSDI averages $1,630/month vs SSI's $994 maximum. SSDI almost always pays more for people with work history. If your SSDI is below $994, SSI can top it up through concurrent benefits.
Can you receive both SSI and SSDI at the same time?
Yes — called concurrent benefits. SSI tops up your SSDI if the SSDI payment is below $994. Your SSDI counts as income against SSI, reduced by the $20 general exclusion.
How is SSDI calculated in 2026?
Based on your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) using a progressive formula. Average disabled worker payment: $1,630/month. Maximum: $4,152/month for those with maximum earnings.
How long do you have to wait for SSDI vs SSI?
SSDI has a 5-month waiting period before payments begin. SSI has no waiting period. Both take 3–6 months for initial determination, and most initial applications are denied — appeals take 1–3 years.
